Knotted letter symbol |
|
My
signature seal stamp, modelled on the design of a 17th/18th century
messenger's letter case in the
collection of the Suntory Museum,
Tokyo.... I have often used it instead of
signing my name, or stamped it over my signature, since "my name"
is something I did not choose, i.e., is not really mine, whereas this image and symbol is. |
|
The knotted letter image alludes to poems the
characters in The Tale of Genji exchanged*....
Present-day Japanese tie prayers written on small pieces of paper,
into knots to attach them to Buddhist temples and the trees around them,
so that, sometimes, the trees look in summer as if covered with snow.... There is a
many-layer (polysemous) connection between my interest in
communication, and this symbol of
a "knotted letter".... |
