Test your pattern recognition ability

This Java applet (re-coded, May 1999, to JDK 1.2; it still seems to work with JDK 1.6.0) still probably has some glitches, but you should be able to use it if you are reasonably forgiving. But it will no longer work at all with older web browsers that only support JDK 1.0.... I apologize for any inconvenience, but I felt it was important to upgrade all the now "deprecated" methods I used when originally developing the applet with JDK 1.0.

Click "new" to generate a new pattern. Click "run" when you're ready for the tiles to be scrambled. Click "eval" to learn if you've got the answer right. Click "answer" to see the correct answer. Clicking on a tile rotates it 90 degrees counterclockwise. Dragging a tile moves the tile (the applet prevents you from dragging one tile over another or dragging it off the board).

Sorry! You need Java to run this exercise.

Notes from JDK 1.0 version: I had this page organized nicely in a table, but Netscape Navigator 3.03 did not process the table correctly. Also, the applet did not seem to work correctly with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 (clicking on a tile did not rotate it).
