I have also been fortunate to get some good search engine placements (albeit for esoteric search arguments -- See example, below). I attribute this to having submitted my pages to a number of different search engines back in 1997 when anybody could submit their pages for free.
I am also thankful for the W3C and Web Design Group free HTML page validation services. If I couldn'd validate my pages every time I change anything, this website would have collapsed long ago, and not have grown nearly so big nor lasted nearly so long as it has.
