Wood
fired ash glaze stoneware vase, by Malcolm Wright.
When I was Museum Shop Manager at The
Baltimore Museum of Art (1970-72), I sold Malcolm Wright's wood-fired pottery. This piece was
$10 retail, and I bought it for myself at cost ($6).
Wright explained to me
that, in each of his kiln firings, he would put a couple pots in the
wood, and the results were unpredictable. Some of these "exposed" / at-risk pieces survived and some didn't.
I think this one is exceptionally felicitous. I also like the
vase's shape, especially the foot ("God is in the details."). |
